IIT Kharagpur successfully concludes its 3rd Young Innovators Program (YIP)

Earlier this year, on July 18, 2019 IIT Kharagpur opened registrations for its third edition of the immensely popular flagship program called the ‘Young Innovators Program’ (YIP), a global competition inviting bright young minds to solve real life challenges through innovations. On November 10, 2019, the competition came to a final conclusion with 6 teams competing with their innovations for the top spot. The program was divided into 4 stages; First stage required the conceptualization of the innovations by the teams; Second stage required the development of the proposals further and even video presentations to that effect; Semi-final and final rounds included a model demonstration of the proposed innovations.
This year the six schools that made it to the final rounds were:
1. Team Divyang from KIIT International School, Bhubaneswar
2. Team Kriyative Bhavanites from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavans Public School, Hyderabad.
3. Team Innovativeloops from Brahm Prakash D.A.V School, Hyderabad.
4. Team Green Trenders from St. Arnolds School, Rourkela
5. Team DL Puram Diamonds from Z.P.H. School, Visakhapatnam
6. Team Grow-It from Sanghamitra School, Telangana

A majority of the participating teams channeled their innovations towards tackling the issues of pollution and nature / resource conservation. The winning team, Divyang from KIIT International School, Bhubaneswar, came up with the design of a green water dispenser which can be operated by foot or body weight. This winning design was aimed for the use of the differently-abled. The innovation could be used to take a shower, water plants or bathe a guide dog.

The first and the second runner up teams were team Kriyative Bhavanites from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavans Public School, Hyderabad and team Innovativeloops from Brahm Prakash D.A.V School, Hyderabad respectively. The teams came up with the design of an apparatus which acted as a carbon activated filter that can be attached to a vehicle to reduce emissions and the design of a telescope that involved 7 mirrors for brighter and high quality imaging during space missions.

Having gained popularity that was commended by the Hon’ble President of India, the YIP initiative has spread its operation to such a large extent that the number of the international applications and registrations for the Program doubled over from last year. This platform for budding innovators is one that promotes future inventors and leaders and is truly an inspiring and empowering initiative by IIT Kharagpur.
