World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year. It was declared by the United Nation on the first day of United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, resulting from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. Two years later, in 1974 the first World Environment Day was held with the theme “Only One Earth”, the host country being United States. This day is seen as a principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. The day was first celebrated in 1974, since then it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.

World Environment Day has been represented as a global platform for public outreach. Over 143 countries celebrate this day annually.

The UN declares a new theme each year. This theme is used by the major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and celebrities worldwide to adopt to advocate environmental causes.

For the last four decades, World Environment Day has been raising awareness, supporting action, and driving change.

The theme for the year 2016 was “fight against the illegal trade in wildlife for life” (zero tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife). The theme focused on the prohibition of illegal trade of threatened species and to save the life of wild animals like elephants, rhinos, gorillas, whales, sea turtles, orangutans, pangolins, rosewoods, helmeted hornbills, tigers including other species. Angola was the host country for the event last year. The slogan was “Go Wild for Life” to raise the voice against wildlife crime and damages caused by it and take actions to prevent it.
