World Industrial Design Day – June 29, 2017

Every year, June 29 is celebrated throughout the world as World Industrial Design Day (WIDD). It was initiated by the World Design Organization (WDO) in 2007 in celebration of its 50th anniversary. The WIDD is an annual affair which increases awareness about the profession of industrial design and champions the power of design to strengthen economic, social, cultural and environmental development.

This year’s theme for World Industrial Design Day, 2017 is “Thinking Outside The Box”, which aims at focusing on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal: A manifesto for Responsible Consumption and Production, based on contributions received from participants during World Industrial Design Day 2016.

Last year, in the WIDD 2016, young designers highlighted that one of the ways in which industrial design can make a positive difference in the world is through sustainable design.

The main objective of The World Industrial Design Day 2017:

  • Celebrate the contributions of designers who are integrating sustainable design elements in their practices by applying new technologies and choosing recycled or sustainable materials to create more environmentally responsible products, and “thinking out of the box” by looking at the a design more holistically.
  • Raise awareness of Industrial design and its role in influencing the behavior and choices of consumers with larger consequences for the whole world.

New Year | NEW Recognition | New Look

The international Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) recently in their 29th General Assembly in South Korea, announced that they will no longer be known as ICSID, instead they are re-branding themselves as The World Design Organization (WDO) effective from 2016. ICSID/WDO expects the re-branding to be completed by 2017, to celebrate their 60th anniversary.
