Constitution Day

Constitution Day is celebrated in India on November 26 every year. On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, and it came into effect on January 26, 1950. Dr. Ambedkar is the Father of Constitution of India. After the independence of India, Dr. Ambedkar was invited by the Congress government to serve as a first law minister of the India. The aim of celebrating this event is to spread the importance of the constitution and to spread thoughts and ideas of Ambedkar.

The Government of India on November 19, 2015, declared November 26 as Constitution Day by a gazette notification. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi made the declaration on October 11, 2015, on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of the B. R. Ambedkar memorial in Mumbai. The year of 2015 was the 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar, he had played a pivotal role in the drafting of the constitution and was the chairman of the Drafting Committee. There was also a special session of Indian Parliament on November 26, 2015, to give tribute to the constitution and Ambedkar. The Parliament House complex was also illuminated on this occasion. Previously this day was celebrated as Law Day.

On this day, quiz and essay competitions are organized both online and offline on the subject of the Constitution of India. There was a lecture on salient features of the constitution in each school. The Department of Higher Education has requested various universities to arrange mock parliamentary debates in colleges on this day.

The Ministry of External Affairs has directed all overseas Indian schools to celebrate November 26 as Constitution Day and directed embassies to translate the constitution into the local language of that nation and distribute it to various academies, libraries and faculties of Indology.
