How Does It Work
There is a helmet that has a camera to capture images at a distance. The helmet also has an LCD screen where these images are shown. A person with poor vision can put on this helmet to clearly see things that are far away.
After a lot of trial and error, Jyoti finally made a prototype. Of course, making it was not easy. Jyoti agrees, “Getting the right equipment was a big problem for me. Another challenge was not knowing the software properly. But the internet helped me a lot in getting information.”
Positive Feedback from Users
He shared it with hospitals, including the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Odisha and the Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar, and they appreciated the product. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Hospital also tested it on patients who reported an “appreciable visual benefit from the device”. However, the users suggested that it be made more compact.
Dreaming Beyond Wikipedia: Free Educational Website for Students
Jyoti’s next dream is a free website for students that provides “unlimited knowledge”. It will be specially targeted towards children living in Indian villages. The inspiration for it came from a news story on how tablets with a wide collection of books were used to promote reading amongst children in Africa.
Jyoti discussed this with his friends and they came up with the idea of a website where “a student can have all study material; plan how they will study; take notes and save it for later; talk to senior professors online to get help; even download complete CBSE books – and all this is available at one place, absolutely free.” They have already gotten permission from CBSE and hope to have the website up and running in the next six months.
