World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated on March 15. It marks an annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the international consumer movement. It was first observed on March 15, 1983. It marks the date in 1962, when U.S. President John F. Kennedy first outlined the definition of Consumer Rights. Consumer rights activist Anwar Fazal working for Consumer International at the time, later proposed the observance of a “World Consumer Rights Day”, and on March 15, 1983 consumer organizations observed that date as an occasion to promote basic rights of consumers.

This day recognizes the basic rights of all consumers. This day is marked with respect and protection of consumer rights and protest against market abuses and social injustices which undermine them.

The theme for the Consumer Protection Day in 2016, was “Antibiotics off the Menu” calling on the world’s largest fast food companies to make global commitments to stop serving meat from animals routinely given antibiotics used in human medicine. It seeks to spread awareness about antibiotic resistance driven by overuse of antibiotics in agriculture to promote faster growth and to prevent diseases rather than treat diseases.

However, in India, December 24th is observed as National Consumer Day. On this day in 1986, Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the President of India.
