World Water Day is celebrated on March 22. It focuses on the importance of fresh water and sustainable management of freshwater resources. It is also used to highlight required improvements for access to WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) facilities in developing countries.
This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. Each year, UN-Water, which is the entity that coordinates the UN’s work on water and sanitation, sets a theme for World Water Day corresponding to a current or future challenge. The engagement campaign is coordinated by one or several of the UN-Water Members with a related mandate. The UN and its part countries dedicate this day to actualizing UN suggestions and advancing exercises in their nations with respect to water assets. Besides, many non-governmental organizations promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats celebrate this day to focus attention on critical current issues. Many theatrical and musical events, educational events, and campaigns are organized worldwide to raise money for access to clean and affordable water on World Water Day.

The theme for 2017, World Water Day would be “Wastewater – Why waste water?” It is about reducing and reusing wastewater as a valuable resource to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goal, to halve the proportion of untreated wastewater and increase water recycling and safe reuse.
The theme for 2016 World Water Day was “Water and Jobs – Better Water, Better Jobs”. This theme shows the correlations between water and jobs created either directly or indirectly by water sources on the globe. As water scarcity worsens around the globe, industries heavily dependent on water like textiles and agriculture are at risk of increased costs, which can then get passed to the consumer
